From Charcoal and Fallen Leaves

Tanya Voges uses her dance, drawing, community engagement and dance film making to create this personal response to the bushfires of the 2019-2020 summer.

From Charcoal and Fallen Leaves was commissioned by Dance.Focus an initiative of Dance Hub SA and Ausdance SA with funding from The Government of South Australia, and support from Torbreck wines.
Thanks also to my Patreon patrons who support my ongoing work, which enabled me to initiate this idea into a work in progress, which is so important for these time sensitive projects.

Thanks to the news reporters who provided insight into the ongoing situations, I have used source material from televised reports. Thanks to my partner, collaborator, film maker Tim Standing, Composer James Peter Brown, Poets Belinda Broughton and David Whyte whose words from their works are spoken in this piece.

Special thanks to the Country Fire Service, CFS, and to all volunteers that worked tirelessly throughout the summer to save what they could and who are still working to re-home people and wildlife, through what has been a tumultuous year.
Thoughts go to all those who lost their loved ones and their homes, may your lives be reimagined and rewritten from charcoal and fallen leaves.
